On Fear

Fear exaggerates. It whispers about disasters that may never come. It freezes me before I even take the first step.

But most of the time, reality is softer than fear’s story. The challenge is hard, but not fatal. The setback is painful, but not permanent.

If I let fear decide, I lose before I begin. If I face it, I usually find that it shrinks in the light of action.

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” – Marcus Aurelius
